Every generated website arrives with images chosen to match the business you described. They are a starting point; your own photographs will almost always do more for you than stock photography.
Replacing an image
Click an image on the page. You get two ways to change it:
- Upload: choose an image from your device. Available on every plan.
- Search: search a stock photography library from inside the editor and insert a result directly.
Alternative text
Every image has alternative text: the description read aloud by a screen reader and shown if the image cannot load. Instantsite writes one for each generated image; you can edit it in the section panel.
- Describe what the image shows, in a few words.
- Leave it empty deliberately if the image is purely decorative. An empty description tells assistive technology to skip it, which is better than reading out a filename.
- Do not repeat the heading next to it.
Choosing better images
- Use your own work, premises, team or products wherever you have them.
- Keep one visual style across the website; mixing warm and cold photography is obvious even when nobody can say why.
- Prefer images with space around the subject: they survive being cropped on a phone.
- Avoid images with text baked into them. They cannot be translated, resized or read aloud.
Your logo and favicon
Logo controls are in the sidebar. A text logo is available on every plan; an image logo and a favicon are paid features. See colours, fonts and branding for the details and the exact plans.
Icons
Icons come from a catalogue of 287, grouped by subject and searchable by name. Click an icon on the page to change it. They inherit your palette rather than carrying colours of their own.
What happens to replaced images
Images you upload belong to your account and the website you uploaded them to. When you save a change that leaves an uploaded image unused, it is cleaned up, but only after the new version of your website has been written, so a failed save can never leave you with a missing image.
